Buying a motorhome or camper van:
A practical guide

Our comprehensive guide to buying a motorhome will ensure that you’ll find the caravan that suits you perfectly!

A crucial question to ask yourself before buying an RV is what type of motorhome is right for you. Luckily, RVs come in a variety of layouts and designs, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Here, we will discuss the different RV models offered by HYMER and what makes them unique.

Overview: Top questions
before buying an RV

  • 1. How do you prefer to travel?

Do you plan to spend your vacation on the road or primarily staying at the campsite?

  • 2. What is the right base vehicle for your motorhome?

Do you prefer quality "Made in Germany" or "Made in Italy"?

  • 3. How much payload do you need?

Are you planning longer trips or do you need any heavy sports equipment?

  • 4. How many beds do you need?

Which bed shape or arrangement will provide you with highest sleeping comfort?

  • 5. How important are the size and features of your kitchen and bathroom to you?

Do you want more spacious design and fancier equipment, or a vehicle that is lightweight, compact and affordable?

  • 6. Which driver's license do you have?

Would you be willing to get another driver's license for a heavier vehicle?

  • RV types and classes: Which suits you best

Class A, B and B+ motorhomes vs camer vans

The first step to being an RV owner is to determine which camper class fits your needs and requirements best. HYMER offers three distinct camping vehicle types: Class A, B and B+

    • Class A RV (Integrated motorhomes)

Class A motorhomes combine the living spaces and drivers cabin without a visible break. Many travellers enjoy the more spacious, open feeling compared other classes. In addition, the integrated driver's cabin is usually better insulated.

Families who are looking for a little more space when travelling often choose Class A motorhomes . The feeling of a large, seamless living space can make the holiday trip much more enjoyable – even during the journey.
    • Class B RV (camper vans)

A Class B motorhome, also known as a camper van, has a body of a van, yet offer a compact kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. As the smallest motorhome they are much easier to handle than larger vehicles.

Camper vans are well suited for couples or single travellers. The comfort – especially in terms of moving space – is somewhat lower, in return you get more flexibility. Parking and manoeuvring in the city is way easier with a camper van . How easy, depends on the size of the body. A converted van can be as large as a small motorhome.
    • Class B+ RV (semi-integrated motorhomes)

A Class B+ a middle ground between Class A and B models built on the so-called cutaway chassis. In a Class B+ model, the driver's cabin comes in its original form and is then combined with the RV’s living area. There is no overhang. All the advantages of the basic vehicle are thus preserved and extended to meet the needs of mobile living and travelling.

A Class B+ RV is well-suited for couples and small families and offers a medium to high level of travel comfort. Compared to a Class A motorhome, a Class B+ RV is more aerodynamic, which has a positive effect on fuel efficiency.

  • The right build for your motorhome: Fiat or Mercedes?

The base vehicle is the foundation of your new motorhome. It is the carrier chassis that is supplemented or extended by the corresponding body. The combination of the original driving cabin and the special frame is also common. In our case, the base vehicle shows which engine is "under the bonnet".

At HYMER you will find two different options

    Mercedes motorhomes and camper vans

Mercedes motorhomes are known for their performance and quality. You can choose from various engine versions and different drive types (front-, rear- or all-wheel-drive) of the smooth-running and reliable Mercedes Sprinter power unit.

The high-quality equipment, including comfort and multimedia features as well as assistance systems from renowned manufacturers, provide the feeling of luxury and safety on board of a Mercedes RVs.

    Fiat motorhomes and camper vans

Fun fact: The Fiat chassis in form of the Fiat Ducato is the most widespread base vehicle in RV construction! You will unavoidably see it when searching for an affordable motorhome for sale.

It provides a solid base for Fiat motorhomes and Fiat camper vans with good workmanship and excellent value for the money.  Innovative design, high-quality handling and advanced connectivity are among the benefits of HYMER's Fiat Camper Vans.

  • Motorhomes from small to large: Enjoying comfort in all sizes

Travel needs are just as diverse as the travel destinations are. This is why motorhome models come in a wide range of sizes. Here is what you need to consider when choosing the right one:

    • whether you are travelling alone, with friends or with children;
    • how much space you personally want;
    • and what kind of driving comfort you are looking for.

Find out more about the key questions when it comes to length, height and width.

Size and width of your motorhome: What makes them so important?

Whether your vehicle is a large or a small RV  depends on three factors: length, width and height. Each of them has an impact on driving performance and travel comfort, which is why you should work out your own preferences in advance. Not every RV for sale is the best fit for you. So, make sure you take your time to compare and explore.

The clear advantages of motorhomes with more length and width are the increased freedom of movement as well as greater living comfort and storage space in the vehicle. At the same time, the bulky size can impair manoeuvrability and make it difficult or even impossible to use in parking garages, on parking lots, or in narrow spaces.

However, large motorhomes may be too high for underpasses, and you might have to find alternative routes and solutions in advance. Furthermore, having a longer motorhome can also mean a higher expenses on ferries and campsites.

    Small motorhomes: compact and flexible

A small RV usually does not exceed a length of around 6.5 to 7 metres. There are even compact camper van models under 6 metres. This makes the vehicle pleasantly agile and easy to handle. Looking for a parking space, crossing on ferries or navigating through narrow passages are all much easier in a smaller vehicle.

Another argument in favour of a smaller size is, of course, the price, because these vehicles are usually cheaper than their larger counterparts. Keep in mind that small motorhomes or camper vans with a fully equipped bathroom (i.e. a shower and toilet), are usually more expensive than those without.

In general, a motorhome that is rather short and compact is well suited for singles, couples and families with at most one small child. However, if you opt for a small model, you will have to make some sacrifices in terms of travel comfort and space. This can be especially noticeable on longer trips or during winter camping with a lot of luggage.

You can find small RVs in the HYMER model ranges:

    • HYMER Exsis-i
    • HYMER Exsis-t
    • HYMER Camper Vans Fiat
    • HYMER Grand Canyon S

    Large motorhomes: comfortable and family-friendly

An RV can be considered large when it exceeds a length of abpout 7 metres. More sleeping space and more comfort due to the increased space for movement is one clear advantage.

In addition, large motorhome models won’t make you sacrifice travel provisions and luggage. Thanks to the larger storage space provided by storage compartments, flaps and cupboards, they are well suited for families and longer trips. If you want an opulent seating area with plenty of room for spacious living that incorporates exciting trends around RVs, it is worth taking a look at a larger camper.

The disadvantage of a large motorhome is that it is somewhat less flexible and correspondingly more challenging to drive. Finding a parking space is not always easy and trips into city traffic should be carefully considered. You should also know that owners of large vehicles often must pay higher fees on ferries and campsites.

Generally, large motorhomes are suitable for families and groups of between three and six people. Couples who wish for more living comfort, sports enthusiasts with lots of equipment and long-term travellers may also benefit from a spacious model.

You can find large RVs in the HYMER model ranges:

    • HYMER B-Class MasterLine I
    • HYMER B-Class MasterLine T
    • HYMER B-Class ModernComfort I
    • HYMER B-Class ModernComfort T
    • HYMER ML-T
    • HYMER T-Class S
  • How many seats and beds does you travel group need?

Depending on the layout, your motorhome is tailored to the needs of different travelling groups. So, consider what you want or need and what you can do without first. The following overview serves as a guide:

Motorhomes for couples or 2-3 people

A motorhome for 2 people or small families with one child is not necessarily a small vehicle. This is because the layout determines how many people can comfortably sleep and live in the motorhome. The good news is, every model can be configured exactly according to your needs (e.g., concerning payload, equipment or storage space).

The following motorhomes are perfectly suited for 2-3 people:

    • HYMER Venture S
    • HYMER B-Class MasterLine T
    • HYMER B-Class ModernComfort T 580
    • HYMER Exsis-t
    • HYMER Exsis-t Pure
    • HYMER ML-T
    • HYMER Tramp S
    • HYMER Camper Vans Fiat
    • HYMER Grand Canyon S

Motorhomes for small families and travel groups of up to 4 people

Small families and travelling groups feel at home in a motorhome for 4 people. The layout of these models provides enough seats and offers enough storage space for all the passengers' luggage. Of course, there are 4 sleeping berths in those RVs, so you don't have to improvise. This size can also be ideal if you are travelling in an RV with a dog.

The following motorhomes are perfectly suited for up to 4 people:

    • HYMER B-Class MasterLine I
    • HYMER B-Class ModernComfort I
    • HYMER B-Class ModernComfort T
    • HYMER Exsis-i
    • HYMER Exsis-i Pure
    • HYMER Tramp S

It is important to know that the

    • HYMER Camper Vans Fiat
    • and HYMER Grand Canyon S

also offer up to four places to sleep and sit but have a rather limited amount of space. They are therefore suitable for anyone who has no problem with being cosy and making small compromises when it comes to comfort.

  • Motorhomes on the scale: RV weight and what you should look out for

You can choose a motorhome under 3.5 tonnes or over 3.5 tonnes among the HYMER models: each offering distinct advantages and disadvantages.

To make this decision easier for you, we will help you with terminology and legal requirements relating to the weight of your RV.

The weight of your motorhome determines whether you can drive it with your current driver’s license, the maximum speed you can travel in certain countries, and the tolls you have to pay. It also affects the configuration and loading of your motorhome.

Every motorhome is designed for a certain weight, which must not be exceeded when driving. This raises the question: How should you configure your vehicle to offer enough space for the passengers, luggage and accessories without exceeding this maximum weight?

Lightweight motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes: Driving as usual

Lightweight motorhomes under 3.500 kg are similar to cars in terms of requirements and regulations. In many countries, it means the same limit and a class B driving licence as for the passenger car. However, stay informed about the regulations in the country in which you are travelling. The amount to be paid for motorway tolls and tolls is usually based on the vehicle weight, so that an RV up to 3.5 tonnes is usually on par with a car.

The disadvantage compared to motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes is that lighter models tend to have a lower payload. Overloading the vehicle means a driving safety risk as well as high fines loss of driving points.

Weight also plays a decisive role when it comes to the selection and installation of any optional extras. You may have to “weigh up” the needs for the extras or a certain number of seats. Our configurator offers you the appropriate guidance: if you exceed the manufacturer's specified weight for optional equipment, you must decide to increase the weight of the vehicle, deselect some of the extras or the permitted number of seats/passengers will be automatically reduced.

Motorhomes between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes: For bigger travelling dreams

To drive a heavier motorhome over 3.5 t, you need a driver's license for trucks. A vehicle over 7.5 tonnes may even need a driving licence of a different category depending on the country, but HYMER does not offer any of these models.

More weight means you can treat yourself to more optional extras and additional seating. This means: sufficient sleeping spaces for your travel group, enough storage space for gear and sports equipment, as well as space for a larger shower, kitchen or queen-size bed.

Since heavyweight motorhomes are also larger than lightweight motorhomes, which can make them more difficult to drive. You should also be prepared to pay higher tolls and fees.

  • Features and facilities: Kitchen, bathroom and more

Which interior suits your travel plans? Explore all the available options when configuring your motorhome. The model range and basic layout provide the framework. You decide on individual customisations.

You already have a choice when it comes to RV beds:

    • Covered bed with pillows and open book and overhead storage cupboards in the rear of the HYMER Camper Van Free S

      Transverse double bed

This bed type is compact and efficient, as it uses the entire width of the vehicle. However, it can be a little tricky to climb into the bed, especially if you are sharing it with another person.
    • Lengthways single bed

Lengthways single beds are very comfortable as they allow easy access and offer a generous sleeping area. In HYMER motorhomes, two lengthways single beds can usually be extended into a large double bed by adding an additional piece of bed padding. Some of the lengthways single beds are optionally available up to a length of 215 cm.
    • Queen-sized island bed

This bed is easily accessible from both sides and offers the comfort of a classic double bed. However, the required space subtracts from the available storage space in the mobile home.
    • Drop-down bed

Drop-down beds are especially flexible, as they can be lowered at night to provide a comfortable place to sleep. During the day, they are simply folded up to make room for a living space. Depending on the position of the drop-down bed in the vehicle, the headroom underneath may be slightly restricted.
    1 / 4

Bathrooms also come in wide variety of design options: The space-saving Compact bathroom offers everything you need for thorough personal hygiene in the smallest of spaces. Split designs bathrooms offer a little more space. If you are looking for even more space, luxury and comfort in terms of hygiene, the Spacious and Salon bathroom are interesting options.

    • Salon bathroom

The Salon bathroom - your very own wellness temple on wheels with a separate space for a sink countertop.
    • Split design bathroom

The split design bathroom with separate shower ensures plenty of freedom of movement and privacy.
    • Comfort bathroom

The Comfort bathroom with a separate shower is spacious and offers everything you need for personal hygiene.
    • Swinging-wall bathroom

The bathroom transforms into a spacious shower by simply flipping away the washbasin wall.
    • Compact bathroom

The Compact bathroom offers everything a fully equipped bathroom needs in a minimum of space.

Man cuts onions in the kitchen of a mobile home - the pan is on the gas stove

Your motorhome's kitchen is your culinary hub on the road, and choosing the right layout can make a big difference in your travel experience. Here are two popular options to consider: You will find more work surface and storage space in an L-shaped kitchen, also known as an angled kitchen, while a compact kitchen is a more practical choice.

By the way: Consider additional security measures, especially for more luxurious mobile homes with expensive equipment. Protective measures against burglary and can include burglar alarms or high-security door locks. You can find out more about this in our guide to motorhome security.

  • Off the grid: : Greater independence with a larger battery and water tank

Do you want to be self-sufficient to have an option to stay secluded in nature? Or is a certain dependence on campsites for electricity and water not a problem?

No matter what you choose: The size of your motorhome battery as well as the capacity of your fresh water and grey water tanks should match your plans. Our travel stories from real people can give you a clearer idea of what is most important to you.

When it comes to power supply, you should ask yourself three questions first:

    • How big should the battery be?
    • Do you want to upgrade your vehicle with an innovative smart battery system?
    • What about supplementing your power supply with solar technology?

It is also important to consider whether all electrical appliances are energy-efficient and whether you cook with on a gas or an induction herd. You should plan generously, especially if you prefer to be away from an external power source when travelling.

By the way: The interior lighting in all HYMER models relies modern, energy-saving LED technology, which saves up to 75 % of electricity consumption.

The white Mercedes HYMER ML-T all-wheel motorhome is parked on an ascending stone road with rocky hills and a slightly cloudy sky in the background.

When it comes to heating and hot water, ask yourself whether you want to heat with diesel or gas. It is also important to ensure that the motorhome or camper van is sufficiently insulated so that you do not lose energy unnecessarily, especially in winter. If you are only travelling in the warm summer season, this point is less important, although good insulation also helps to prevent the vehicle from heating up too much.

Depending on your travel behaviour, we also recommend considering the terrain in which you are planning to travel. Adventure and nature campers are well advised to consider off-road suitability. A suitable vehicle should then offer a certain amount of ground clearance and appropriate tyres. The right angle of repose also allows travelling on rough terrain with steep inclines. A 4x4 motorhome usually is a good choice here.

    Camping in winter

You want to travel in your rv in winter too? HYMER makes it possible! We deliver all motorhomes ready for winter as a standard. Our models achieve top results in cold chamber tests. Purchasing a winterized motorhome from HYMER, makes you well-equipped for all weather conditions.

And what about camper vans? HYMER Fiat camper vans are also winter-proof as standard; all other HYMER camper vans can be equipped with the appropriate optional extras to ensure they're also winter-ready. This way, you can enjoy the beauty of winter camping without compromising on comfort or safety.
